Masonry chimneys

A masonry chimney is built from brick, block or stone and may contain clay tile, metal or another approved liner. The visible stack is only part of the system: the crown, cap, flashing, flue, smoke chamber and firebox all matter. Water entry can affect masonry, joints and adjacent building materials.

Ask a masonry chimney contractor to identify the exact component needing work. Repointing mortar, rebuilding a crown and installing a liner are distinct jobs with different materials and access needs.

Factory-built fireplaces and metal chimneys

A factory-built unit is an engineered assembly with manufacturer-specific components and clearances. Its metal chimney, chase cover and termination should be evaluated as parts of that listed system. Substituting a generic component can be inappropriate.

Find the model information if available. Ask the contractor whether replacement parts are compatible with that model and whether the entire venting path will be checked for corrosion, gaps or damage.

Wood stoves, pellet appliances and gas vents

A wood stove connector and chimney can accumulate deposits and require attention to joints, clearances and draft. Pellet systems have their own vent configuration and cleaning points. Gas appliances may use a different venting approach and still need appropriate inspection when performance or moisture concerns arise.

When calling a chimney sweep company, name the appliance and fuel. Send a model number or clear photos if asked. Confirm the technician works on that appliance type rather than assuming every chimney contractor does every kind of venting.

A simple system inventory

Write down the appliance type, fuel, approximate age, visible chimney material, number of flues, last service date and any recurring symptoms. Note whether the chimney is exterior or runs through the house. This short inventory improves quote accuracy and helps a contractor prepare the right equipment.
